Because 2020 is a leap year, gamers have to wait an entire extra day to get their hands on id Software's Doom Eternal on March 20. Those interested parties who keep a highly optimized PC setup can apparently expect an insane performance from the studio's proprietary game engine id Tech 7, which reportedly will max the game out at 1,000 frames-per-second.

Billy Khan, id Software's lead engine programmer, talked about the capabilities of id Tech 7 in a video interview regarding Doom Eternal which was published by IGN Friday. He says their previous engine, the id Tech 6, maxed out at 250 frames-per-second.

Even 250 FPS seems like a ludicrous number in an age where Microsoft's next-generation console, the Xbox Series X, will reportedly reach 120 FPS. However, Khan said that they have thus far been able to test Doom Eternal at 400 FPS using a specialized setup, and apparently the game could reach even higher limits on future PC hardware.

Doom Eternal is easily one of the most anticipated titles of the year, as it's the follow-up to id Software's acclaimed, action-packed first-person shooter Doom (2016). Fans of the game have also built an interesting symbiotic relationship with fans of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which will also be releasing on March 20 but exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.

Despite the game's subject matter, id Software and its publisher Bethesda appear to be riding the immense wave of popularity garnered by Doom (2016) to appeal to as wide an audience as possible, both in gaming hardware and in genre taste. One recent TV ad drew attention for including rap music rather than the series' well-worn heavy metal staple tracks. Yet its marketing machine continues to churn on all fronts.

Beyond the purely technical elements, Doom Eternal will be differentiating itself from its predecessor through a number of new additions like a female demon, and more focus on mechanics like platforming on top of the high-octane demon slaughtering that fans know and love. However, it is precisely because the Doom franchise is so well known for its speed and bloody action that Khan told IGN the team has been working to make their proprietary engine as technically advanced as possible.

Doom Eternal will be released on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One on March 20th with a Switch release to come at a later date.
